Facing life’s challenges – one step at a time

In “A Journey Through Broken Dreams”, the Voyseys candidly share their struggle with infertility, the decade of medical procedures they endured to try to conceive a child, and the decision to redesign their lives with career changes and a major move to another continent. As with the death of any dream, it meant asking the hard questions and reexamining the life they would have chosen. Their life took a detour, a different path than they expected, but ultimately, they found peace in their marriage.
“Growing up, “family” meant something very different to Bianca Jones Marlin. Her biological parents provided foster care to multiple children, giving Marlin the joy of having many siblings from an array of different backgrounds. On occasions, she would stay up late listening to the stories from her siblings’ past homes—stories filled with trauma and sadness. Today as a neurobiologist, Marlin’s research focuses on how trauma can be passed down from generation to generation.”
“Did you know that childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up? Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect, and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer.” It’s high time to confront, prevent and treat trauma.
If you have ancestors or older relatives who went through a very distressing event, their emotional and behavioral reactions could ripple through the generations of your family and affect you. This is called intergenerational trauma. Public health leader Linda Baggio is in conversation with California’s first Surgeon General, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. Linda discusses her personal experiences with ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences), and her commitment as a parent to disrupting intergenerational transmission.
