It’s all well and good to know about health in general, but what do you know about health in older people? It’s important that you have at least some information, or else you’re going to struggle to take care of yourself in your later years. Either this, or you’re going to end up struggling to look after someone that you love when they find themselves succumbing to old age in some way. As such, it’s important that we all educate ourselves as much as possible on the health of older people. If you’re going to do this, why not start now?
Decreased Mobility
One of the most common things that older people experience is a decreased level of mobility in one way or another. What we mean by this is that some people find that it becomes more difficult to move about as they get older, whether this is because their joints are weaker, or because they are developing issues in their limbs. It’s very common, so it’s not really something to be concerned about but it’s best to get checked out by a doctor anyway, just to make sure that it is related to age and not anything else.
A lot of older people will rely on a walking aid the older that they get. While some are perfectly happy with the use of a walking stick, others are going to need a little more support such as a wheelchair. There are different options that you can look into if you ever need to know about this, so you can rest assured that you’re never going to get stuck in a position where you can’t get around because of your decreased mobility.
More Susceptible To Hearing Loss
If you live long enough, we all start to lose our hearing. It’s just one of those things that happens, but nobody knows why for sure. However, just because it’s going to happen at some point, this does not mean that you should not do everything in your power to protect it while you can. This is going to include doing things like trying to stay away from excessively loud noises, or using some kind of ear protection to drown out a lot of the noise.
There are hearing aids available for those who need them, so don’t worry you can use these if they help you. Just make sure that you are taking good care of the ears, as they are very delicate and fragile so the last thing that you want to do is cause them any kind of harm.
Changing Dietary Needs
This doesn’t happen to everyone, but some elderly people find that their dietary needs change as they get older. It’s not usually anything to worry about, but you might find yourself eating less as your body doesn’t tolerate massively large portions anymore. As well as this, you might develop disorders like IBS and some kind of intolerance to certain types of foods, but this is okay. As long as you are keeping an eye on things and avoiding anything that starts to make you feel sick, then you are on the right path.
If this is bothering you, you can speak to a doctor and there might be something that they can do to help. It will depend on what the issue is though, as sometimes it’s just going to be a case of changing your diet to fit what works for your body now.
Loss Of Certain Functions
As we age, we tend to lose the ability to do certain things. This is not always the case, and some older people find that they have no troubles, but it’s quite common for it to happen. It’s not going to happen all at once, and it’s definitely not going to ruin your life, but you will have to find a new way to live with these decreased functions. For example, a common one is that older people tend to have trouble gripping things in their hand and holding onto them. That might mean that they need a little bit of extra assistance, or that you do some strength training.
Getting The Help Needed
There is nothing wrong with getting the help that is needed when you or someone that you love needs it. In fact, it’s always better to ask for help and be able to live life to the fullest, not having to miss out on anything simply because you feel as though you should be able to do it yourself. You can get home care by the hour if you don’t need it all the time, and could just use a little bit of help once or twice per week or something.
Or, if there is a more serious level of care needed then there are other options that can be considered. It’s all about providing the right level of help to those that need it, making sure that help is available. This might mean living in a residential facility, but this is only for people who either want to, or need to.
At Risk For Specific Mental Illnesses
Of course, as we age we are more at risk for specific mental illnesses such as dementia and alzheimers. It’s never anything nice to think about, but you’ve gotta be aware that this can happen. While it can strike at any point, the older you get, the more likely it is that you will develop a condition like this. There are things that you can try to avoid it for as long as possible, but it’s a good idea to have a plan in place just in case.
While getting older, and our loved ones getting older isn’t necessarily something that we like to think about, this doesn’t mean that it’s not important we do so anyway. The more information that you can prepare yourself with, the easier it will be to look after yourself or a loved one as they age. The fact is that we all end up with deteriorating health at some point in our lives, and asking for help when this happens is not going to be a bad thing.
